Kiteboarding in Spanish Ontario!
The natural beauty of the Spanish River Delta and North Channel is all around us, and so is the wind! Usually we get N and NE in the mornings and S SW in the afternoon. But with the expense of water at our fingers tips, and the help of a few boats, we can access the Whalesback Channel and North Channel to kite ANY wind direction!
Due to rocky and/or muddy bottom booties or watershoes are recommended.
About Kiteboarding
Kiteboarding and kitesurfing are the same sport but with the only real difference being whether you are on flat water or riding waves, hence kitesurfing. Power Kiting has been around a long time and in its infancy was primarly down on the ice and land with karts and skates.
As the kite manufacturing and design evolved they became safer, lighter, more efficient and re-launchable...making the crossover to a water sport possible.
When the power of the kite was combined with surfboard or wakeboard skills...kiteboarding as its own sport truly became to take shape.
In both cases, the rider uses a large power traction kite to pull themself up and onto the waters surface. Once on top the rider uses their board skills to control speed and direction while resisting the pull of the kite and "tacking" against the wind for upwind travel. The sport is very dynamic since you will need to understand the wind direction, aerodynamics of kiteflying, have board skills, be aware of possible dangers as well as know how to swim.
To become a professional kiteboarder takes years of practice, however if you are simply looking for a fun exciting sport for exercise and fun, most students can learn the basics in our 9 hour intro course, see Lessons for more details.
Kitesurfing is rapidly growing in popularity as equipment has become less expensive and more travel friendly allowing kiters to search and chase the wind to all 4 corners of the globe.
And now it has finally reached Spanish Ontario!
